一艘偷渡船上周六深夜在地中海翻覆，可能釀成史上傷亡最慘重的地中海船難。最新消息顯示，船上人數有950人，扣除獲救的28人，逾900人恐葬身大海。「無國界醫生」組織形容：「地中海的大墳場正在形成。」歐洲遭指摘漠視問題，歐盟決定周四開峰會商討對策。
義大利基礎建設部長戴里歐（Graziano Delrio）表示，19日難民船隻船難的生還者，抵達西西里島卡塔尼亞港後，義大利當局以涉嫌非法販賣人口為由逮捕其中兩人。
戴里歐在卡塔尼亞港告訴記者：「檢察官薩維今晚逮捕兩名涉案嫌疑人，顯示義大利司法正在運作。」
這起船難的死亡人數如果獲得證實，將是數十年來地中海南部移民危機死亡人數最多的船難之一，而自年初以來，死亡人數將增至逾1500人。
聯合國難民署統計，去年經由地中海偷渡到歐洲的非洲移民約21萬9000人，其中3500人不幸喪生。今年以來在歐洲各國申請庇護的難民人數已經高達3萬5000人
義大利和馬爾他的海軍昨持續在蘭佩杜薩島 以南177公里處，搜尋上周六沉船的可能生還者。一名孟加拉籍倖存者說，偷渡船上約有950名難民，其中約200名女性和近50名孩童，「許多人都被關在船艙內，像籠中老鼠般死去。」他說：「我和其他人因在甲板上才得以存活，其餘的人都溺斃，許多人位於船艙，因人蛇集團關上舷窗阻止他們跑出來，結果他們都葬身海底。」
這艘船從利比亞偷渡至義大利途中，在蘭佩杜薩島附近遇難，義大利海巡隊指示附近一艘葡萄牙商船前去搭救，但船上乘客一看到救援船靠近，全部蜂擁至船的一邊，導致船隻傾斜翻覆。
北非、中東、南亞部分國家民眾因長期遭受戰亂和貧窮之苦，紛紛逃往歐洲追求更安定的生活，而利比亞位居通往歐洲的地中海沿岸，加上深受內戰之苦，成了可偷渡海外而不受官方管制的外逃之處。
人蛇集團為貪圖利潤，使用簡陋的漁船充當偷渡船，往往超載，導致船難不斷發生。馬爾他總理穆斯卡特說：「一場悲劇正在地中海上演，如果歐盟和世界各國持續閉上眼睛，將像過往一般，因對種族滅絕視而不見，而遭嚴厲的指控。」
